SigmarFarms Method of Farming: Integrating Hydroponics, Traditional Agriculture, and Poultry Farming

SigmarFarms is revolutionising agriculture by adopting a holistic approach that combines hydroponics, traditional farming, and poultry farming. This innovative model maximises sustainability and profitability while promoting the responsible use of resources. Our system dedicates 70% of the farm to hydroponics, leaving 30% for traditional farming, primarily focused on chicken feed production and testing yield differences between both methods.

Greenhouse-Based Hydroponics

SigmarFarms utilises advanced greenhouse systems to grow crops hydroponically. Our state-of-the-art sawtooth tunnel greenhouses offer a controlled environment that optimises plant growth through:

  • Automated climate control: Temperature, humidity, and ventilation are precisely managed to provide ideal growing conditions year-round.
  • Efficient water usage: Our hydroponic systems use up to 90% less water than traditional methods by recycling nutrient solutions.
  • Maximised space efficiency: With vertical growing and greenhouse optimisation, we can grow more crops in less space.

These greenhouses enable consistent production and higher yields, regardless of external environmental conditions. Crops grown include

Traditional Farming for Chicken Feed

While most of our land is dedicated to hydroponics, 30% of the farm is used for traditional farming. This section is essential for:

  • Chicken feed production: We grow grains and other crops to feed our free-range chickens.
  • Yield comparison: By growing the same crops using traditional and hydroponic methods, we measure the differences in growth rates and yields, providing valuable insights to optimise production further.

Poultry Farming: Raising Broilers and Layers

SigmarFarms integrates broiler and layer farming to complement our agricultural operations. We have established a robust poultry system to meet the demand for eggs and poultry products. Key features of our poultry farming include:

  • Broiler and layer cages: Our farmhouses have 10,240 layers and 5,760 broilers using modern cage systems that ensure the well-being of the chickens.
  • Automatic feeding and manure removal: These systems reduce labour costs and maintain high hygiene standards, promoting the chickens' health while ensuring efficient production.
  • Egg collection and incubation: Our automatic egg collection machines ensure efficient handling, and we utilise advanced incubators to raise healthy chickens from day-old chicks.

Challenges of Soilless Agriculture and SigmarFarms' Solutions

  1. Initial Costs
Solution: While the initial setup for hydroponics and poultry systems can be expensive, we see it as a long-term investment that will yield higher returns due to increased efficiency and reduced water usage.

  2. Technical Expertise
Solution: SigmarFarms collaborates with agronomists, veterinarians, and poultry experts to ensure optimal nutrient balance, animal welfare, and system maintenance. We use high-tech monitoring systems that track pH levels, nutrient concentrations, and water quality, ensuring plants and chickens are thriving.

  3. Dependency on Power
Solution: We have installed solar systems and backup generators to ensure continuous operation, especially in remote areas. This guarantees that our greenhouses, poultry systems, and other critical operations continue functioning, even during power outages.

Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation

We are committed to sustainable farming practices. Our combination of hydroponics, traditional farming, and poultry integration is designed to optimise resource use, reduce environmental impact, and increase yields. By harnessing advanced greenhouse technology, efficient water management, and renewable energy sources, SigmarFarms sets a new standard for sustainable agriculture in Botswana and beyond.

Through this holistic approach, we aim to inspire investors, researchers, and fellow farmers to adopt more sustainable and innovative farming methods to enhance food security and profitability while preserving natural resources.
